A quick one, thanks to Paraffine who reminded me of my love for the Ekranoplans!

She's made after the newer version, right? Not the older Soviet design

Also, if it wasn't known already, she looks amazing

The one that I was thinking about was the Lun-class ekranoplan

I've always been fascinated by the idea of ekranoplans. Flight, but like just barely flight. I kinda wish the idea had taken off for commercial use and in more of the world.

I think the reason why the idea isn't used or isn't used as much is due to a few limiting factors. For now, the ones that I can think of are construction materials: I doubt that the materials are very different from the ones used in aircraft construction, making them fairly fragile; and the condition of the sea: waves that rise over a certain height will pose a risk to the ekranoplan and crew/cargo.

Also, public image would be another factor. When you think Ekranoplan, at least I think of the big Soviet monster. which doesn't really say "successful project" and efficiency

I guess the main problem with the Ekranoplan is the same than with the hydrofoil or the Hovercraft : it certainly works... but not in all weather, it's costy and it's fragile... and the advantges aren't great enough compared to a regular boat to compensate these disadvantages.

For now at least.

Not really. Though tbh, it really depends on your answer to the lift/weight ratio. The more you try to reinforce the body for it to be usable in all or most weather conditions, the more weight you'll have, increasing the necessary amount of lift thus increasing the required amount of thrust, in turn, decreasing fuel efficiency, increasing fuel costs and so on. Plus, taking off and flying at low altitude/sea level, is a lot more difficult than flying at cruising altitude due to air density.
Sorry for raining on your parade.

For current tech and and science, mate. Who knows what we can make in several decades.

One of the weirdest things to come out of the USSR. Love it. ^_^

Aaaaah, sorry, I didn't mean to make you draw anything :) She looks nice. Better watch out at sea!
